SUMMARY:Camp Cherry Valley Signup Period Opens
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Garretson will be leading our contingent of scouts to Camp Cherry Valley this summer\, July 23-29. We have booked spaces for 52 scouts for CCV\, but we often sell out our allotment for this popular event. To sign up for CCV and secure a spot\, you will need to deliver a check to Mr. Garretson in the amount of $650\, payable to BSA Troop 355 (put the scout’s name in the memo line). Mr. Garretson will start collecting checks at 6:00 p.m. on Monday May 15 at the Scout House\, and will be there until 8 p.m. that eventing. To secure a spot we recommend delivering a check on May 15\, or as soon thereafter as possible. The first 52 checks received by Mr. Garretson will get the spots; after that we will start a wait list.

Our next two nighter is Kern River in May. \nEQUIPMENT: Bring standard camp gear for car camping. The rock climbing school provides all climbing gear. Bring warm clothes. Weather ranges from 70 degrees in the day to 35 degrees at night. We will camp at 3200’\, and it can be cold and windy at night. Drive about 1 mile to the Park entrance. Then you continue on 2 miles and turn right into the group campsite area. A: No\, the badge takes all day\, including a classroom session around 4:00 pm. \nQ: What sort of climbing is required to get the badge?A: The Scouts needs to climb three different routes and repell three different routes. They also need to belay (with a guide back-up) three climbers on their routes. The routes are appropriate for beginners yet challenging for most of our Scouts. They have a safety line on at all times with little to no slack. \nQ: Can Dads climb?A: Yes\, dads can climb in the half day option. Priority for the limited spaces will go to the Scouts. If a Dad signs up for the half day and get bumped out by a Scout\, his check will be returned. Normally we have space for Dads! \nQ: My son doesn’t have the merit badge\, can he just climb the half day?A: No

Full day merit badge with climbing and camping: $1592. Half day more advance climbing and camping: $1193. Camping only: $5 Do not add this fee if you are signed up for climbingChecks\, Releases\, and Shoe sizes due on Monday October 24. (absolute deadline) Checks payable to BSA Troop 355 Send to Brian Snaer (2605 South Oak Knoll Ave\, San Marino\, CA 91108)Your space is not reserved until your check is submitted\, first come\, first served! \nNOT INCLUDED:-Meals Planned by patrols(Saturday breakfast\, lunch\, dinner and Sunday breakfast)-Friday dinner on the road \nWhy in the world would we camp two nights?Several reasons: 1. Climbing starts at 7:00 am. 2. You need 21 nights of camping to get Eagle. 3. First class cooking signoff is much easier to do on a two nighter. Shorts are not recommended for climbing. \nDIRECTIONS:•	Take I-10 East to Route 62. The exit is marked Morongo Valley and Yucca Valley.•	Continue on Route 62 for approximately 28 miles to Joshua Tree.•	Continue east through the city of Joshua Tree for about 12 miles. •	Make a right turn (south) on Indian Cove Road. Drive about 1 mile to the Park entrance. Then you continue on 2 miles and turn right into the group campsite area. We are in group campsite 1•	There is usually decent cell-phone coverage in camp•	The number for the NPS Ranger at Indian Cove is 760-362-4367. \nFAQ’s \nQ: Can we drive in Saturday morning?A: Yes\, but you have to be there by 7:45 for the climbing \nQ: My son has a game\, can he come in late/early and still get the badge?

SUMMARY:Mt Whitney Hike and Campout
DESCRIPTION:The troop has secured a very limited number of permits to attempt a one-day summit of Mt. Whitney – the highest mountain in the lower 48 states\, at 14\,495 feet above sea level. This is an exceptionally challenging hike – 22 miles and over 6\,000 feet of elevation gain. We will camp near the trailhead on Saturday night\, then make the summit attempt on Sunday. We will either camp or stay in Lone Pine on Sunday night\, then return home on Monday. \nAs safety will be our first priority\, this hike will be limited to our most active and experienced hikers. We anticipate that hikers will need to have completed a Philmont trek with the troop in order to get on the roster for this trip. If you are interested\, please contact Mr. Dawes to be placed on an interest list. We will fill the roster starting with our most experienced hikers. But current hiking will also be essential; anyone planning to make this hike should also attend our advanced troop hikes in August and early September. \nWe plan to offer this hike again in future years\, so our younger scouts who become involved in our hiking program will also have the opportunity to climb Mt. Whitney with 355.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Backpacking Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Hello Backpackers\, \nTroop 355 is going backpacking on September 17; Buckhorn to Cooper Canyon Trail Camp along the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails in the Angeles National Forest. This is a great opportunity for first time backpackers to get some experience because the hike into camp is 2.7 miles and one of the flattest hikes you are ever going to get in the Angeles National Forest (with only a net loss of 250 feet in elevation). \nParents and Scouts who are interested in backpacking are encouraged to attend. The 45 min meeting will cover the unique equipment needs for Scout backpacking. No uniforms required. You DO NOT need to sign up to attend – just show up – WE WILL START ON TIME. \nDon’t miss your chance to include backpacking in your Scouting experience! \nBrian SnaerAssistant Scoutmaster\, Troop 355626 840-7702
