SUMMARY:Echo Mtn. Night Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike will take us up the popular Sam Merrill Trail\, located in the mountains of Pasadena/Altadena.  This hike is nothing new to 355 except for we are going to do it at night!  It adds an element of challenge and spookiness.  You absolutely must bring appropriate clothing (could be cold) and a fully charged headlamp.  2L of water should be plenty as the temp will be cooler.  We will leave the trailhead at 7:00 pm and return around 9-9:30 depending on our speed.  PLEASE BRING A CELL PHONE\, and we will call for pickup when we are halfway down.

SUMMARY:Introductory Backpack Trip to Cooper Canyon - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:The Troop 355 fall backpacking trip is traditionally a short and easy outing – the main goal is to introduce our new backpackers to this great activity. We feel our backpacking program is one of our troop’s great strengths\, and we hope that many of you will get to experience the challenges and rewards of backpacking with the trooop\, and eventually become part of our experienced Philmont crews. These trips are also lots of fun for our experienced backpackers; we generally offer an additional hiking option for those who want to hike a few more miles. \nWHEN: Saturday\, September 29 and Sunday\, September 30. \nWHERE: Buckhorn Campground to the Cooper Canyon Trail Camp along the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails in the Angeles National Forest. Rated as one of the best trails in the Angeles. \nDIFFICULTY: This hike is 2.7 miles each way on the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails. It is as flat a hike as you are going to get in the Angeles National Forest with a net loss of 250 feet in elevation on the hike to camp. This is an easy hike\, perfect for first time backpackers. If you can carry a duffle bag\, you can do this trip – although you will not be happy climbing out of Cooper Canyon if your pack is too heavy or you have not prepared at all for a hike – so be prepared! \nAVAILABILITY: This is an introductory backpack. Everyone is welcome. If you have ever had an interest in backpacking\, this is the opportunity to try it! The troop will host a backpacking seminar in late August or early September at the Scout House so our new backpackers can learn what to pack (and what not to pack) – stay tuned for details. \nCOST: $10 per hiker. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, September 24. Bring your check made out to BSA Troop 355 to the backpacking seminar on September 17\, or the troop meeting on September 24\, or mail to Kelly Moffat\, 2280 Adair St. San Marino 91108. \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 a.m. sharp on Saturday\, September 29. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 1 ½ hours. We will return to the trailhead Sunday morning about noon and should be home by 2:00 PM. \nWATER: IMPORTANT: The Cooper Canyon creek currently has an extremely low water level. We believe we will be able to filter some water there\, but cannot be confident that everyone will be able to filter enough water for their Saturday needs and for hiking out on Sunday. Thus\, we are asking that all backpackers carry enough water with them on Saturday to cover their drinking water needs for the weekend. That should be about 4 liters. The 4 liters should be in your backpacks when you show up on Saturday morning\, there will not be an opportunity to fill your water containers at the trailhead. You can carry the water in a Camelbak style water bladder\, Nalgenes\, platypus bottles\, or just simple plastic drinking water bottles. At camp\, the troop leaders and senior scouts will filter water to provide the necessary cooking water for the crews. Plus they will filter extra drinking water for anyone who may run out. \nHOW YOU CAN HELP WITH THE WATER SITUATION: Everyone should start hydrating by THURSDAY NIGHT. Drink plenty of water before going to bed\, and keep drinking water all day Friday and Friday night. Hydrating your body now will greatly decrease the chance of dehydration on Saturday or Sunday. If you drink a lot of water when you hike\, you may want to bring 5 liters. Senior scouts and experienced backpackers\, if you are OK to hike in with a heavier pack\, bring extra water – you can help out others who may need it. Also\, our experienced backpackers should bring their filters to help out with the filtering process. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, fruit or nuts breakfast. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced Friday\, September 28 by email. \nSPECIAL NOTES:It might be cold (40 degrees) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. Our troop leaders are always available to discuss equipment. Please contact them if you have any questions.Any cars parking will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI) or at the gas station just south of the Angeles Crest exit from the 210. \nDirections to the Trailhead: Parking is limited at the trailhead so please car pool. Fill your car up with Scouts and backpacks. Take the 210 west to Highway 2 north (Angeles Crest Hwy.). Drive approximately 34.7 miles to the Buckhorn Campground sign and take a sharp left into the campground. This can be a tricky turn to see\, so watch for the following landmarks as you get close – large Cloudburst Summit sign at 33.4 miles\, Buckhorn Day Use Area sign at 34.5 miles (do not turn here)\, then a sign saying Buckhorn CG Entrance 500 feet. After you turn left into the campground\, drive 0.4 miles and veer right at the junction. After 0.1 more miles there will be a sign pointing left that says Day Use Trail Area. Follow that to the left and you will see a sign saying Burkhart Trail. Follow the Burkhart Trail signs until the road ends at the trailhead parking lot. Hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror. Depending on the number of cars in the parking lot\, we may need to park some cars outside of the Campground along the Angeles Crest Hwy.

We will then hike along the canyon floor\, following the stream up to Bear Canyon Trail Camp. \nDIFFICULTY: This hike is 4 miles each way. We will lose about 1000 feet of elevation hiking down into Bear Canyon\, then gain about 1100 feet hiking up the canyon to the Bear Canyon Trail Camp. This is an intermediate backpack trip\, but it is on the easy side of intermediate. \nCOST: $10 per hiker. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, April 9. Bring your check made out to BSA Troop 355 to the April 9 troop meeting\, or mail or drop off a check to Kelly Moffat\, 2280 Adair Street\, San Marino\, CA 91108. If you paid in March for the originally scheduled trip\, just sign up again on April 9 (or let Mr. Moffat know you are in) – your March payment will be applied for this trip. \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 AM on Saturday\, May 5. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 45 minutes. We should return to the trailhead Sunday morning by noon and be home by 1:00 p.m. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, instant oatmeal\, cocoa for Sunday’s breakfast. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced Thursday night\, May 3 by email. \nSPECIAL NOTES: It might be cold (40 degrees) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. \nEQUIPMENT: Please review the troop backpacking checklist on the Resources page of the troop website to make sure you have all the gear you will need. The troop leaders are always available to discuss equipment – feel free to contact any of them if you have questions about gear for the trip. If you are a new backpacker\, please consult with one of the troop leaders before the trip to make sure you are on track to have all the proper gear. \nDirections to the Trailhead: Take the 210 west to the Angeles Crest Highway 2 north. Drive approximately 9.9 miles (just past the Clear Creek Information Center). Turn right on the Switzer Truck Trail (where there is a small parking lot and a bathroom structure)\, and drive down the hill to the parking lot at the end of the road. The parking lot sometimes fills early\, so you may need to drive back up the hill to park. We will carpool as much as possible – fill your car with scouts and backpacks. Any cars parking at Switzers will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI\, Big Five) – don’t forget to hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror. \nThe trail begins at the bridge near the far west side of the parking lot.

SUMMARY:Navigation/Orienteering Signoffs at Lacy Park - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Reiling and our scout leaders will be offering the required navigation/orienteering signoffs to our scouts this Sunday\, February 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Lacy Park. We will meet at the flagpoles near the Virginia entrance; note that the Scout House entrance to Lacy Park is usually closed on weekends. \nThese signoffs are often difficult for our scouts to obtain – so this is a great chance to get them. Come on out Sunday to tackle the famous Troop 355 Orienteering Course. See which of you has the right stuff to successfully navigate the course and identify all the correct trees! We will also discuss finding directions without using a compass\, and measuring the height and width of designated items like trees and streams. In addition\, we will cover the GPS requirements that are in the new handbook\, so please bring a smartphone with a GPS application if you are able (if you are unable to do this you can team up with a buddy). \nBy completing these navigation and orienteering requirements\, scouts will be able to obtain Second Class signoff 3d and First Class Signoffs 4a and 4b. \nPlease bring your compass\, your Scout Handbook and a pen or pencil (in addition to the phone with GPS). We would also recommend a daypack with water. \nSenior scouts – please let Mr. Reiling know if you will be able to help out. This is a great leadership opportunity.

SUMMARY:5 Mile Hike: Echo MountainClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:Come on out and hike with the troop this Saturday – we will be hiking up Echo Mountain. This is the classic Troop 355 training hike – the trail rises over 1300 feet on its way to the Echo Mountain ruins. The total hike distance is 5.2 miles round trip. This hike will satisfy the Second Class five mile hike requirement\, so if you have not had the chance to get this signoff yet\, this would be a great opportunity to do so. We will orient our maps and use them to navigate on this hike. And we will spend a bit of time at the top exploring the hotel and railway ruins. \nIn addition\, scouts currently taking the Citizenship in the Nation MB will have the opportunity to complete the speech requirement on this hike (definitely more fun than doing it at the Scout House). This hike will also count as a visit to a historic place for scouts who have not yet completed Requirement 2(a). \nWe will meet at 6:30 a.m. sharp\, at the top of Lake Avenue in Altadena\, where Lake meets Loma Alta – meet by the stone gate on the northeast side of the intersection. The early morning is the best time to do this hike – this trail gets very crowded on weekends\, and also can be very hot\, so by going early we can avoid these problems and still have most of our day left after the hike. We should return to the trailhead between 9:30 and 10 a.m. \nBring a daypack with your 10 essentials (most importantly 1 to 2 liters of water)\, plus your Scout Handbook if you wish to obtain any signoffs.
