SUMMARY:5 Mile Hike: Echo MountainClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:Come on out and hike with the troop this Saturday – we will be hiking up Echo Mountain. This is the classic Troop 355 training hike – the trail rises over 1300 feet on its way to the Echo Mountain ruins. The total hike distance is 5.2 miles round trip. This hike will satisfy the Second Class five mile hike requirement\, so if you have not had the chance to get this signoff yet\, this would be a great opportunity to do so. We will orient our maps and use them to navigate on this hike. And we will spend a bit of time at the top exploring the hotel and railway ruins. \nIn addition\, scouts currently taking the Citizenship in the Nation MB will have the opportunity to complete the speech requirement on this hike (definitely more fun than doing it at the Scout House). This hike will also count as a visit to a historic place for scouts who have not yet completed Requirement 2(a). \nWe will meet at 6:30 a.m. sharp\, at the top of Lake Avenue in Altadena\, where Lake meets Loma Alta – meet by the stone gate on the northeast side of the intersection. The early morning is the best time to do this hike – this trail gets very crowded on weekends\, and also can be very hot\, so by going early we can avoid these problems and still have most of our day left after the hike. We should return to the trailhead between 9:30 and 10 a.m. \nBring a daypack with your 10 essentials (most importantly 1 to 2 liters of water)\, plus your Scout Handbook if you wish to obtain any signoffs.

SUMMARY:Kern River Whitewater CampoutClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:The annual Kern River Rafting trip will be held on Memorial Day Weekend (May 27-29). We will arrive at the Sierra South rafting outfitters in Kernville early Saturday morning. We will board buses and ride up the river for a rafting run. We get back on the buses and run the river again. Then we have lunch and work on the whitewater merit badge. After that we travel up the river 30 min. to Camp Whitsett (a BSA camp in the Sequoia National Forest). We make camp and spend the afternoon working on scout skills. That evening we have a formal campfire at which we retire an American flag with an official ceremony. The next morning we go on a five mile hike and work on some more scout skills. We relax and enjoy the afternoon. A campfire that evening concludes the trip and we break camp early on Monday morning and head home. This is the first camping trip with our new scout patrols\, and a great way for them to start off with Troop 355.

SUMMARY:Hiking Merit Badge: Hike #1Echo Mountain - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:Troop 355 will be offering all the hikes required for Hiking Merit Badge this spring. We hope that a number of our scouts will be inspired to earn the rarely achieved Hiking MB. Feel free to come on out to hike with the troop on some or all of these hikes (provided that the later more difficult hikes are recommended for senior scouts and experienced hikers. \nThe first required hike is a 5 miler – so we will be doing our classic Echo Mountain training hike. \nThe Echo Mountain hike is 5.2 miles round trip\, and it provides a great workout with over 1300 feet of elevation gain. We will spend some time at the Echo lookout\, enjoying the views and the old railway and hotel ruins\, then hike back down to the trailhead. All scouts and parents are welcome on this hike – this is a great hike for both experienced and newer scouts. If you have not yet had the chance to get the Second Class 5 mile hike signoff\, this will be a great opportunity to do that. Bring your 10 essentials plus your scout handbook for the signoffs. Most importantly\, please do not forget to bring 1-2 liters of water. \nWe will meet at 6:30 a.m. at the top of Lake Street in Altadena\, where Lake meets Loma Alta – we will be gathering at the stone gate on the east side of the street. We should be finished between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m.

SUMMARY:Navigation/Orienteering Signoffs at Lacy Park - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:Our scout leaders will be offering the required navigation/orienteering signoffs to our scouts this Sunday\, November 13\, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Lacy Park. We will meet at the flagpoles near the Virginia entrance; note that the Scout House entrance to Lacy Park is usually closed on weekends. \nThese signoffs are often difficult for our scouts to obtain – so this is a great chance to get them. Come on out Sunday to join our SPL and ASPLs to tackle the famous Troop 355 Orienteering Course. See which of you has the right stuff to successfully navigate the course and identify all the correct trees! We will also discuss finding directions without using a compass\, and measuring the height and width of designated items like trees and streams. In addition\, we will cover the GPS requirements that are in the new version of the handbook\, so please bring a smartphone with Googlemaps installed if you are able (if you are unable to do this you can team up with a buddy). \nBy completing these navigation and orienteering requirements\, scouts will be able to complete First Class Signoffs 1 and 2 (old version of the handbook) or First Class Signoffs 4a and 4b\, plus Second Class Signoff 3d (new handbook). \nPlease bring your compass\, your Scout Handbook and a pen or pencil (in addition to the phone with Googlemaps). We would also recommend a daypack with water and a jacket. \nIf you would like to obtain these signoffs and have a conflict on Sunday afternoon\, please let Mr. Moffat know – if there is interest we will do our best to offer a makeup opportunity to obtain these signoffs before the December BOR deadline.

SUMMARY:Introductory Backpack Trip to Cooper Canyon - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:The Troop 355 fall backpacking trip is traditionally a short and easy outing – the main goal is to introduce our new backpackers to this great activity. We feel our backpacking program is one of our troop’s great strengths\, and we hope that many of you will get to experience the challenges and rewards of backpacking with the trooop\, and eventually become part of our experienced Philmont crews. These trips are also lots of fun for our experienced backpackers; we generally offer an additional hiking option for those who want to hike a few more miles. \nThis fall we will be jumping right into our backpack program – with our introductory backpack trip on the first weekend of our scouting year! \nWHEN: Saturday\, September 17 and Sunday\, September 18. \nWHERE: Buckhorn Campground to the Cooper Canyon Trail Camp along the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails in the Angeles National Forest. Rated as one of the best Trails in the Angeles. \nDIFFICULTY: This hike is 2.7 miles each way on the Burkhart and Pacific Crest Trails. It is as flat a hike as you are going to get in the Angeles National Forest with a net loss of 250 feet in elevation on the hike to camp. This is an easy hike\, perfect for first time backpackers. If you can carry a duffle bag\, you can do this trip. We will offer an additional hiking option to our advanced hikers – after we reach the trailhead on Sunday a group will continue hiking to the summit of nearby Mt. Waterman (an additional 8 miles and 1500 feet of elevation). \nAVAILABILITY: This is an introductory backpack. Everyone is welcome. If you have ever had an interest in backpacking\, this is the opportunity to try it! Dr. Snaer will host a backpacking seminar on Monday\, August 29 at 7:30 PM at the Scout House. Come learn what to pack (and what not to pack). \nCOST: $25 per hiker. You can sign up for the trip at the August 29 backpacking seminar. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, September 12 (the first troop meeting). Bring your check made out to BSA Troop 355. \nMEET: At Scout House at 6:30 a.m. sharp on Saturday\, September 17. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 1 ½ hours. We will return to the trailhead Sunday morning about noon and be home by 2:00 PM. \nWATER: IMPORTANT: There is currently no water available at camp. Every hiker should carry enough water on the hike on Saturday for drinking on the hike and for the remainder of Saturday (approximately 3.5-4 liters per hiker). A group of senior scouts and dads will hike to Cloudburst Summit on Saturday afternoon and bring down additional water for Saturday’s dinner cooking\, and everyone will get 2 liters of water to use on the hike out Sunday. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, fruit or nuts breakfast. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced Thursday night\, September 15 by email. Because of the water situation\, you should not bring any lunch or breakfast food that requires additional water (hot chocolate\, oatmeal\, etc.). \nSPECIAL NOTES:It might be cold (40 degrees) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. Our troop leaders are always available to discuss equipment. Please contact them if you have any questions.Any cars parking will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI) or at the gas station just south of the Angeles Crest exit from the 210. \nDirections to the Trailhead: Parking is limited at the trailhead so please car pool. Fill your car up with Scouts and backpacks. Take the 210 west to Highway 2 north (Angeles Crest Hwy.). Drive approximately 34.7 miles to the Buckhorn Campground sign and take a sharp left into the campground. This can be a tricky turn to see\, so watch for the following landmarks as you get close – large Cloudburst Summit sign at 33.4 miles\, Buckhorn Day Use Area sign at 34.5 miles (do not turn here)\, then a sign saying Buckhorn CG Entrance 500 feet. After you turn left into the campground\, drive 0.4 miles and veer right at the junction. After 0.1 more miles there will be a sign pointing left that says Day Use Trail Area. Follow that to the left and you will see a sign saying Burkhart Trail. Follow the Burkhart Trail signs until the road ends at the trailhead parking lot. Hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror. Depending on the number of cars in the parking lot\, we may need to park some cars outside of the Campground along the Angeles Crest Hwy.
