SUMMARY:Bear Canyon Backpack Trip - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:TROOP 355 INTERMEDIATE BACKPACK TRIP \nBEAR CANYON \nWHEN: Saturday\, March 12 and Sunday\, March 13\, 2016 \nWHERE: Switzers Trailhead to Bear Canyon Trail Camp in the Angeles National Forest. We will hike on the classic Gabrieleno Trail\, past Switzer Falls and down into Bear Canyon. We will then hike along the canyon floor\, following the stream up to Bear Canyon Trail Camp. \nDIFFICULTY: This hike is 3.75 miles each way. We will lose about 900 feet of elevation hiking down into Bear Canyon\, then gain about 1000 feet hiking up the canyon to the Bear Canyon Trail Camp. This is an intermediate backpack trip\, but it is on the easy side of intermediate – so everyone is welcome. New backpackers are encouraged to attend\, provided they come prepared with proper backpacking gear. We will take the hike slow and easy. \nCOST: $10 per hiker. Deadline to confirm your spot is Monday night\, March 7. Bring your check made out to BSA Troop 355 to the March 7 troop meeting\, or mail or drop off a check to Kelly Moffat\, 2280 Adair Street\, San Marino\, CA 91108 \nMEET: At Scout House at 7:00 AM on Saturday\, March 12. We will divide troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to the trailhead is about 45 minutes. We should return to the trailhead Sunday morning by noon and be home by 1:00 p.m. \nMEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool\, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday\, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style)\, bring your own breakfast bars\, instant oatmeal\, cocoa for Sunday’s breakfast. Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced Wednesday night\, March 9 by email. \nSPECIAL NOTES: It might be cold (40 degrees) at night\, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in\, a good sleeping bag\, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED. \nEQUIPMENT: Please review the troop backpacking checklist on the Resources page of the troop website to make sure you have all the gear you will need. The troop leaders are always available to discuss equipment – feel free to contact any of them if you have questions about gear for the trip. If you are a new backpacker\, please consult with one of the troop leaders before the trip to make sure you are on track to have all the proper gear. \nDirections to the Trailhead: Take the 210 west to the Angeles Crest Highway 2 north. Drive approximately 9.9 miles (just past the Clear Creek Information Center). Turn right on the Switzer Truck Trail (where there is a small parking lot and a bathroom structure)\, and drive down the hill to the parking lot at the end of the road. The parking lot sometimes fills early\, so you may need to drive back up the hill to park. We will carpool as much as possible – fill your car with scouts and backpacks. Any cars parking at Switzers will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI\, Sports Chalet) – don’t forget to hang your Adventure Pass on your rear view mirror. \nThe trail begins at the bridge near the far west side of the parking lot.

SUMMARY:5 Mile Hike: Echo MountainClick for Details
DESCRIPTION:Come on out and hike with the troop this Sunday – we will be hiking up Echo Mountain. This is the classic Troop 355 training hike – it is a 5.2 miles round trip\, and it provides a great workout with over 1300 feet of elevation gain. We will spend some time at the Echo lookout\, enjoying the views and the old railway and hotel ruins\, then hike back down to the trailhead. All scouts and parents are welcome on this hike – this is a great hike for both experienced and newer scouts. If you have not yet had the chance to get the Second Class 5 mile hike signoff\, this will be a great opportunity to do that. Bring your 10 essentials plus your scout handbook for the signoffs. Most importantly\, please do not forget to bring 1-2 liters of water. \nWe will meet at 6:55 a.m. at the top of Lake Street in Altadena\, where Lake meets Loma Alta – we will be gathering at the stone gate on the east side of the street. Please note that this trail gets busy on the weekends; you may need to park a block or two away. We will be finished between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m.

SUMMARY:Advanced 10 Mile Hike: 3Ts - Timber Mountain\, Telegraph Peak and Thunder Mountain
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 25\, we will be hiking the legendary 3Ts Trail. This trail summits three separate peaks in the Cucamonga Wilderness – Thunder Mountain\, Telegraph Peak and Timber Mountain. This is an advanced hike for our experienced hikers and backpackers – to be eligible for this hike you should have completed multiple 10 mile hikes with the troop\, and/or multiple backpack trips. Our hike will begin at the top of the Mt. Baldy Ski Area Chairlift. We will follow the outer edge of the ski area up to Thunder Mountain\, then hike the 3Ts Trail over Telegraph Peak and Timber Mountain to Icehouse Saddle\, then hike down Icehouse Canyon to the trailhead. The hike will be approximately 10-11 miles\, and we will be climbing at least 3000 feet in total elevation. We will be at an altitude of over 8000 feet for most of the hike. \nOur adult leaders for this hike will be Mr. Chase\, Dr. Snaer\, and Mr. Moffat – come on out and hike with your old scoutmasters\, before they get too old! Please let one of the leaders know if you would like to go on this hike. We will need an accurate head count for this one\, as we will have to arrange carpools and a short car shuttle between the Baldy Ski Area parking lot and the Icehouse Canyon Trailhead. \nWe will meet at 6:30 a.m. sharp on Sunday morning at the Scout House. Bring your 10 essentials\, including plenty of water. Also\, everyone will need to bring some money for the chairlift – the fee is $15 for adults\, $13 for scouts. We should finish the hike by approximately 3:00 p.m and be home by 4:00.

SUMMARY:Philmont Training Hike: Echo Mountain. All scouts and parents are invited - click for details
DESCRIPTION:Echo Mountain is the classic training hike for our Philmont trekkers – it is a 5.2 mile hike round trip\, and it provides a great workout with over 1300 feet of elevation gain. The Philmont 2015 trekkers will be hiking Echo on Sunday morning\, and all scouts and parents are welcome to join us. This would be a great hike for any younger scout thinking of getting more involved in our hiking or backpacking program\, especially for those who missed Kern – scouts will be able to get the 5 mile hike signoff on this hike. Bring your 10 essentials plus your scout handbook for the signoffs. We will meet at 6:55 a.m. at the top of Lake Street in Altadena\, where Lake meets Loma Alta. We will be finished between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m.

SUMMARY:Kern River Whitewater Campout - Click for Details
DESCRIPTION:The annual Kern River Rafting trip will be held on Memorial Day Weekend (May 23-25). We will arrive at the Sierra South rafting outfitters in Kernville early Saturday morning. We will board buses and ride up the river for a rafting run. We get back on the buses and run the river again. Then we have lunch and work on the whitewater merit badge. After that we travel up the river 30 min. to Camp Whitsett (a BSA camp in the Sequoia National Forest). We make camp and spend the afternoon working on scout skills. That evening we have a formal campfire at which we retire an American flag with an official ceremony. The next morning we go on a five mile hike and work on some more scout skills. We relax and enjoy the afternoon. A campfire that evening concludes the trip and we break camp early on Monday morning and head home. This is the first camping trip with our new scout patrols\, and a great way for them to start off with Troop 355.
